Spooky Halloween donuts with candy eyes and vampire teeth decorations on a white plate

Spooky Donuts

Donut Batter

41/2 teaspoons of instant yeast

⅓ cup warm water

1½ cups milk

½ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

⅓ cup butter, softened

5 cups all-purpose flour

Canola oil for frying

Donut Glaze

(I am going to be specific with the brands I used because I am in love with how this turned out – this recipe is not sponsored)

½ cup butter (I used the one from Costco, Kirkland New Zealand butter)

2 cups powdered sugar

2 teaspoon vanilla

5-7 tablespoons of Evaporated Milk (I used Iberia Evaporated Filled Milk)

Directions

  1. In a standing mixer, combine lukewarm water and yeast. Let it sit until dissolved for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add warm milk, sugar, salt, eggs, butter and 2 cups of flour. Mix for 2 minutes at low speed. Add the remaining 3 cups of flour and continue mixing dough. Scraping down sides.
  3. Place dough in a large greased bowl. Cover loosely with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 to 2 hours or until doubled.
  4. Timeout: The dough may look a little wet, at least it did for me. Do not panic! I know I did. Just be extra gentle and use a little extra flour to roll it out as you usually would do.
  5. Roll dough out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into donuts using a donut cutter or cookie cutter about 3 or 4-inch. Let stand for about 10 minutes and then cut the donut holes.
  6. In a large pot, pour oil until it is at least 3 inches  high and place on medium heat. Don’t let it get too hot! I think 375 F should be good.
  7. Carefully drop donuts into hot oil, only a few at a time. Fry, turning once, for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Time for the glaze.

Glaze:

1. In a small pot on low medium heat, melt the butter.

2. Remove from the stove and add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until everything comes together. Add evaporated milk until you reach the desired consistency. I like the glaze very thick but you may like it thinner. Your donuts, your business!

3. Place donuts on a rack and drizzle with glaze or dip them in it. Congratulations! You made donuts and it’s time to go to town!

Want to make them spooky? Add candy eyes and fake vampire teeth 🙂
